PowerChute Network Shutdown
Reliable network based shutdown of multiple computer systems to enhance the manageability of APC UPSs in datacenter environments.

APC's PowerChute network shutdown software works in conjunction with the APC Web/SNMP Management Card to provide graceful, unattended shutdown of multiple computer systems over a network. Its scalable architecture can support a virtually unlimited number of client systems. Administrators can quickly configure it via a browser-based interface, and can customize command files to run on each server in the event of an unattended shutdown.

For applications requiring dedicated serial connections instead of network-based ones, an alternative approach is to use PowerChute plus in conjunction with the Share-UPS and Interface Expander products.

Features & Benefits
User Interface
PowerChute network shutdown (standard) Use a standard web browser to set network-based communications, set individual system shutdown delays, and view power events
Time saving, flexible configuration via the Web Supports standard web browsers with HTTP 1.0 protocol
UPS Administration
Configurable actions Configure up to 4 types of actions for over 20 power/UPS related events (depends on the UPS model)
Embedded web server Enables easy software configuration through a standard web browser using HTTP v1.0 protocol
Administrative shutdown Remotely shutdown and restart all protected computer systems from any web browser
Configurable port settings Prevents conflicts with other applications using web and SNMP ports
Prevents unauthorized shutdowns Uses MD-5 authentication to ensure
Reduces cable clutter Shuts down clients over the network; dedicated serial cables no longer needed
Scalable architecture Supports virtually unlimited number of clients
Diagnostics
Create event log as possible action based on power event Keep track of power events
Configuration Conflict Detection Shutdown software automatically detects if the system pre-shutdown window is set to a value longer than the available UPS run time
UPS status checking Shutdown software continuously checks UPS status to verify current condition
Shutdown coordination In extended outages, UPS proactively coordinates and confirms safe, complete shutdown of all systems before UPS turns off
Event Handling
Notify users Notify an administrator or all users of a power related event
Shutdown/Reboot
Run command file Enables customized responses (i.e. application shutdown) to an event. Includes a configurable execution delay time. Commands can be canceled if delay time has not expired
Shutdown operating system Provides automatic operating system shutdown. A configurable delay time ensures that command files are completed before operating system shutdown begins
Application Shutdown
  • Gracefully shuts down all MS- BackOffice applications. See BackOffice shutdown document for more information.
  • Supports BackOffice standard and Small Business Server Editions.
  • Gracefully shut down Lotus Notes and Domino Servers (Windows NT and 2000 only). See notes shutdown for more information.
  • Gracefully shut down Web Servers (Microsoft IIS, Netscape Enterprise Server, Netscape FastTrack Server).
Recommended Applications
Shutdown of servers in a multiple OS environment being protected by a single datacenter type UPS like APC's Symmetra Power Array or APC's Silcon
